Ethnic Humor

I think that racial humor is alright in some context. I agree with what we talked about in class that it depends on who says it and who their audience is. I also think that the examples like Kat Williams, Dave Chappell, and even Dane Cook are allowed to talk about racial stereotypes and it be okay, only because it is all out of good fun. Now I am not someone who gets upset when they make fun of white people (as a white female), and talk about the stereotypes because I think it is funny myself, however if it is said in a hurtful way, then that is where I get defensive. I think that big comedians don’t leave anyone out because if they make fun of one, they make fun of everyone. Stereotypes can be somewhat funny at times, mostly out of ignorance. Now I know that white people do get cold, but a stereotype is that white people run in the winter because they don’t get cold. I mean that is absolutely ridiculous so it is funny. I don’t take it seriously. I think that comedians bring everyone together because they are saying EVERYONE gets stereotyped. Not just you. I think they also want it to be taken lightly because it is ignorant.

Prosocial Video Games?!

I think the idea of prosocial videogames is a good idea. I completely agree with the idea that violent videogames have a negative effect on children. Why wouldn’t the same ring true to positive nonviolent video games have a positive effect on children? Living with a 15 year old brother you see a lot of different video games. He and his friends do act different when he plays certain games. After call of duty they act like they are really in the game. They switch turns after one dies. They will then switch the controller until the other one dies. After another game such as basketball, they don’t act as if they are violent and pretend they are playing war. They act like they are playing basketball, or they are pro football players. I think that if they start having video games that are more and more about helping people instead of Grand Theft Auto, stealing people’s cars, etc. they will become more helpful at least right after that time of playing. I think that if they play long enough, maybe it will have a lasting effect on them.  Who knows maybe the young generations could instead of being so aggressive, be more helpful and be more willing to be happy and not think that everyone is out to get them. (Hostile Expectation Bias) The world definitely needs better people.

Sex on TV

I completely agree with the article about how sex is portrayed on television. Being 22 and knowing what kinds of shows are on television and how they portray sex as a thing every young teen does and how it is okay to do it with basically everyone. Some of my favorite shows such as One Tree Hill, Friends, and lots more displayed teens as sleeping with whoever they were in a relationship with, at the age of 15. To me, that’s absolutely crazy. It shows sex, not as sex actually is, but as a fake reality to some people. Even now watching shows such as Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, Gossip Girl and all of them sex is portrayed as something you just do. With Jersey Shore they just have sex with whoever are the easiest, low standards, and if they don’t get it in at the end of the night, then they are extremely upset about it.  Now with the show Teen Mom out there, they have these girls who had sex and got pregnant. Is it them showing how “if you get pregnant, you become famous?” This is such a hot topic with the show right now, sure it has stuff about how to prevent it, but then again the majority of people watching it, which is a young crowd, may not know the difference. I just agree that sex on television is portrayed so poorly and done so loosely and with everyone.

Well here it is

I have never blogged before so this is very new to me. Regarding the past weeks readings and class material I feel like a lot of sensitive issues will be brought up. I was really interested in reading the articles. I liked the article that talked about the different television shows and the ethnicities on TV. and the stereotypes made. I like watching other cultures and seeing how different ethnicities live their lives. One of my favorite shows growing up was the Cosby Show. I feel so ignorant because I've never really watched and thought about stereotypes when they were obviously being made. I never thought I listened to the stereotypes but I was. It's hard not too, and stereotypes were being made about people like me. I feel so sheltered because I never sat back and realized how Latinos were stereotyped on television or the lack of Asians on TV. The articles were very interesting and eye opening for me.

I do think it is really awesome how different ethnicities are showing up on television. I think it is about time that they do, especially with my uncertainty and interest in it. It is a shame that it has taken this long to get everyone included on television. However when I do think about shows like the Real World and their portrayal and how they want different ethnicities to be seen is absolutely ridiculous. I think that they are shaping peoples opinions about stereotypes and that is not how it should be.
